• Goal: pervasive switched 10/100 FD, with GE access as needed
• Reality:
  • Buldings: 150 connected... but only about 20 are Cat 5
  • Subnets: Nearly 300 dept'l subnets... but fewer than half are switched
• Accounts: over 100,000
• Machines: Nearly 50,000
• Dialin: 2200 modems
• Remote sites: approx 50
• Main backbone: 4 GE switches; 38 BB routers; 2 BR
• Research backbone: Separate GE infrastructure
• BB Traffic: Nearly 1 TB/day on production backbone
• WAN Traffic: (Commodity + HPNSP) peaking near 100Mbps
  • even without HD/IP experiments
• Multicast: PIM-SM interoperability problems (solved)
• Wireless: Starting to deploy 802.11b
• DiffServ: mostly moot until FD FE is pervasive
• IPv6: waiting for a forcing function (& Microsoft)
