 UW Computing & Communications
 16 October 2000 (rev 19 Dec)
Scope: UW Net (3 campuses, 2 hospitals) + UWPN + K20 + PNWGP + SNNAP
Ideology: No ATM, no VLANs, route only IP
UW-Seattle:
-
Goal: pervasive switched 10/100 FD,
    with GE access as needed
 -
Reality:
-
Buldings: 150 connected...
but only about 20 are Cat 5
 -
Subnets: Nearly 300 dept'l subnets...
but fewer than half are switched

 -
Accounts: over 100,000
 -
Machines: Nearly 50,000
 -
Dialin: 2200 modems
 -
Remote sites: approx 50
 -
Main backbone: 4 GE switches; 38 BB routers; 2 BR
 -
Research backbone: Separate GE infrastructure
 -
BB Traffic: Nearly 1 TB/day on production backbone
 -
WAN Traffic: (Commodity + HPNSP) peaking near 100Mbps
- even without HD/IP experiments

 -
Multicast: PIM-SM interoperability problems (solved)
 -
Wireless: Starting to deploy 802.11b
 -
DiffServ: mostly moot until FD FE is pervasive
 -
IPv6: waiting for a forcing function (& Microsoft)
