Hub Modification
New Parts
This is a photographic sequence of the modifications made to the geared hub. Each original axle has had its planet cage flanges turned down to a boss and a stop lip. There is now a completely encased planet cage. Bronze bushings are pressed into the planet gears and bronze thrust washers space them from the sides of the cage. Hardened steel dowel pins are used as the planet shafts . The new planet cage is attached to the axle by shrink fitting over an interference fit of about 0.002".
Here is a photo of the turned down axles with bosses and stop lip flanges remaining onto which the new cages are pressed. |
Here are the new, 5 planet cages. One of them has the gear slots cut into it. The holes are 0.2495" for 1/4" dowel pins to be pressed in. |
Here is a view of the gears actually meshing. There are dummy aluminum shafts, slightly undersized, that are pushed into the planet cage here. |
This is another view of the gears meshing. They wouldn't mesh with the 4 hole pattern that I wasted my time on before making the 5 hole cages. |
