Threats/risks to web servers

• Denial of Service (DoS) attacks
  • Crashing server (e.g., Apple Web Sharing)
  • Using up all CPU cycles, memory, disc space, network sockets
  • Deleting files
• Theft / Alteration / Deletion of data
• Masquerading (stealing your IP address or domain name)
• Hack server (or server's account), then hack root to take control of system
• Hack another service or open/stolen account to get root, then attack web server
