I wanted to backup this blog in preparation of doing some general maintenance and mucking about. However, MT's built-in backup feature uses the /tmp directory as the destination for backup files. As this blog is on a host where I don't have access to the /tmp directory, I needed to configure MT with an alternative directory to use in the place of /tmp.
        You can do that by adding the TempDir setting to mt-config.cgi:

Step 1: SSH into your host and navigate to your mt-config.cgi file. For example:

cd ~/blog/mt/mt-config.cgi

Step 2: use pico to edit mt-config.cgi

pico mt-config.cgi

Step 3: You'll get a similar screen to what's below (I've **** out the some data I don't want to share with the world- you will see your own user, password, and other information in plain text).

UW PICO(tm) 4.6                               File: mt-config.cgi

## Movable Type Configuration File
##
## This file defines system-wide
## settings for Movable Type. In
## total, there are over a hundred
## options, but only those
## critical for everyone are listed
## below.
##
## Information on all others can be
## found at:
##  http://www.movabletype.org/documentation/config

#======== REQUIRED SETTINGS ==========

CGIPath           /dietiker/blog/mt/
StaticWebPath  /dietiker/blog/mt/mt-static/
StaticFilePath   /hw15/d74/dietiker/blog/mt/mt-static

#======== DATABASE SETTINGS ==========

ObjectDriver DBI::mysql
Database movabletype
DBUser ***************
DBPassword ***************
DBHost ***************
DBPort ***************

#======== MAIL =======================

MailTransfer sendmail
SendMailPath /usr/lib/sendmail

Step 4: Use your arrow keys and navigate to the line below beginning with "StaticFilePath" which is in the "Required Settings" section. Enter the TempDir setting followed by the directory you wish to use as your temp directory. This directory should absolutely be secure! Use an .htaccess file to limit access to this folder, as the backup will contain sensitive information you don't want to reveal. For example:

TempDir  /hw15/d74/dietiker/blogbackup/

Notice that the path to my home, /hw15/d74/dietiker/, is the same for both the StaticFilePath setting and the TempDir setting. I'm forcing MT to use a directory in my home, which I can control access to, instead of the system's /tmp folder.

Step 5: Exit and save, using the same file name.

Now, when you use MT's built in backup feature (found in System Overview > Tools), the backup files will be stored your new backup directory. I recommend downloading and deleting them from the server.

This file will not open in Excel 2008, at all. No error message appears, nor is there any clue to the user what the problem is. Attempts to double click the file or use the File Open menu result in nothing.

The file does open, without complaint, in Excel 2004; however, if I highlight the sheet name as if to edit it, Excel 2004 complains that the "/" character is not allowed. So, in Excel 2004, I can open files with disallowed characters, edit and duplicate that file, and I only get an error message if I actually attempt to edit the sheet name that contains the disallowed character.

Seems pretty reasonable, doesn't it?

Being nosy, I transferred the file to a computer with Excel 2007 in order to see if it would open. Attempts to open it get the following error:

"Excel found unreadable content in (filename). Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes." After clicking yes, the file opens. The Sheet name has been renamed to "Recovered_Sheet1" with all data seemingly intact. A new window opens with the following message:

"Renamed invalid sheet name."

At that point I can save the document, which will open again without complaint in Office 2007 and Office 2008.

Seems pretty reasonable, doesn't it?

Ideally, Excel 2008 would have the ability to automatically rename sheets like Excel 2007, but that is not the case and I can't find any discussion of this on Microsoft's forums.

At this point the only options are to transfer files to computers with Office 2007 or Office 2004 and manually convert them for the user, or to leave Office 2004 on Macs. I'm opting for the latter.

In which case, why upgrade?

As it stands, if I did a thesis next year, I could only take one more elective (assuming 6-7 credits a quarter) before graduating next June. And there are so many electives I want to take! Now, if I could only give up my remaining core classes instead, it would be an entirely different deal all together...

        I just found out today I passed the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) test. I'm not quite yet "certified" because I still need to be endorsed by a current CISSP. But, it's nice to know I didn't spend $499 to fail a test!
        The test itself was exhausing; for 250 multiple-choice questions, you have a six-hour time limit, and I took nearly five and a quarter. Every 100 questions I took a 10 minute break and ate a snack while walking around the back of the room, stretching my legs. I was finished with the first pass through in about three and a half hours, and then spent the rest of the time on a second pass. I'm glad I took that second pass; I changed about 20 answers and that might have made all the difference in my score.

It was definitely the most grueling and the hardest certification test I've ever taken. The Apple tests I've sat for usually took me no more than an hour, and because they're narrower in scope, it was a lot easier to pass them with my working knowledge. The CompTIA tests took about the same amount of time, and again I was able to rely on practical experience to cover the bulk of the material. On the other hand, the CISSP test requires a great deal of arcane knowledge that may not actually be relevant in your specific line of work. Hence, it's referred to as "10 miles wide and an inch deep". It also will probably be the last new certification I seek for quite a while.

        UW Technology provides instructions for configuring Entourage 2004 to use the UW Exchange server. These instructions work for Entourage 2008 as well, but for both versions of Entourage the Global Address List (GAL) doesn't appear. Since this is a useful tool to have configured, I set about trying to get GAL to work.
        I suppose the easiest thing to have done is to contact the UW Exchange folk, point out that their instructions don't include GAL, and ask them what settings I should use. But after working in tech support for 10 years, I refuse to call tech support. I mean, I should just be able to figure this stuff out. So after a lot of experimentation, here's what I came up with & how I came up with it.

First, like any good library student, I googled entourage exchange global contacts. This started me off in the right direction. The first hit gave me a page from UCLA Social Sciences Computing documenting how to set up Entourage to access their Exchange server. Interestingly, they had different servers listed for the exchange server and the ldap server. Clue #1.

The second hit, from Phoenix-Talent school district #4, provided some useful screen shots on how the GAL operates in Entourage. Clue #2.

The third hit provided some details about how Entourage uses ldap to perform lookups against the Exchange Global Catalog. Clue #3.

Since I have Parallels to run a virtual WinXP machine on my iMac, I switched over to that and fired up Outlook 2007. I have it configured to use my departmental exchange server, so I created a new identity for UW Exchange and configured my account. What I wanted to know was the settings it used to see the GAL. It's not really a configurable option when creating an exchange account in Outlook as it is in Entourage. But I'm pretty nosy so I figured I could learn something.

In Outlook, I opened a new mail message and clicked the address book icon to open the GAL.

Then I right clicked on the Address Book pull-down list to get to properties:

Interestingly, the properties provided a server name and directory.

I closed outlook and reopened it, and repeated the same procedure. As I expected, a totally different server name appeared in the properties page of the Global Address List. Essentially, according to Outlook, the GAL resides on server1.netid.washington.edu and server2.netid.washington.edu (and possibly more). Clue #4.

I switched back to Entourage and opened the Accounts window to edit my UW Exchange account. I went to the advanced tab to configure the ldap entry that links to the Exchange Global Catalog, providing an Entourage version of the GAL.

I first tried using one of the full server & directory entries from the Outlook properties window: "lando.netid.washington.edu/Global Address List". No dice.

Then I tried stripping the server name: netid.washington.edu/Global Address List". Again, no dice.

Finally, I hit the winner: just enter netid.washington.edu

In Address Book View, a new exchange Directory Service icon appeared, allowing me to navigate the GAL.

And finally, when opening a new message, I can also access the GAL to perform lookups.

Finally, I've uploaded a handy instruction sheet that contains all account configuration information when configuring Entourage 2008 with a UW Exchange account. It's the end of Winter quarter at the iSchool, which can only mean one thing: drama. You'd think a library school* could keep out of trouble, but that's just impossible for our #4 ranked school in the nation. This penultimate quarter of the year brings not one, but two scandals to rile up the LIS cohorts: the 560 fiasco and student body elections.
        First, the 560 problem. Unfortunately for a handful of students in my cohort, they needed to get into 560 for spring quarter or they would not be able to graduate on time. Unfortunately, they did not get in during registration. Now for some of these students it was just a case of getting up late, but the fact that registration opened at 5:05 am and not 5:55 am meant that the slots were gobbled up before our plucky students could get in, even those who did get up by 5:50. So...they had to resort to beggary & bribery to get the more fortunate first year students who did get in to give up their spaces. Some prevailed; others will try to get into the distance 560 section.

Wait, you ask, what's the drama? After all, they will graduate on time- albeit by taking a less desirable distance section. But no harm done, right?

Well, the drama lies in the fact that for over a week, this 560 drama played out publicly on the various school listservs, with students publicly questioning the administration's failure to openly address this issue. Many, many students were angry, confused, and worried about their own future ability to graduate on time and were discussing this on iChat, iKnow, and amongst themselves. An ALISS officer discussed the situation with school administration and asked for a public statement on the issue. Anything, really. An acknowledgement that students are concerned. Now, there might be good reasons that the iSchool doesn't guarantee spaces in core classes for graduating students. But a simple statement stating why those policies are there would go a long way toward diffusing the situation. Perhaps something like: "we've considered a waitlist or add-code procedure for core class registration but have decided against it because of [x]". Or, "we've decided that core classes beyond 510 and 520 will be first come first served because [x]".

But all we get is silence.

I have two issues with this. One, it's a basic lack of respect by the administration to refuse to acknowledge student concerns. Students, first year students, are scared that this will happen to them; perhaps they'll be unable to register for a core class and they won't have the option of a distance class to save their behinds. To pretend this issue doesn't exist, or to refuse to acknowledge student's requests for a clarifying statement, is disrespectful. But it's also more than that; it's a failure of leadership. For all the iSchool talks about creating the future leaders of the profession, they routinely fail at modeling leadership traits themselves.

Then this weekend comes the iSchool student body elections. Now, I'm not exactly neutral on this issue; I'm the ALISS vice-president and the iServe webmaster. So I have a pretty good grasp on what's going on in the school; I'm consistently involved in a wide variety of events; and I'm proud of the organizations I serve and the other officers I work with. Enough so that when I read the website of a pair of students running for ALISS president on a platform of "ALISS is crap, here's what we're going to do", I can't decide if I should laugh hysterically or gouge my eyes out in disgust.

Now seriously, kids. If you want to critique the way things have gone down this year, by all means do so. Certainly there is room for improvement. But to make suggestions for next year that are directly lifted off the things we did this year, and then to accuse current officers of not doing much, or excluding participation, is downright crazy.

It also seems very bizarre to me that two people who, to my knowledge, have never come to an ALISS open meeting, have never contacted an ALISS officer to discuss any issues, have never offered to volunteer for any ALISS activity such as booksale (The most successful one in the past 10 years, I might add) or have never done anything to suggest an interest in ALISS at all are suddenly selling themselves as the ALISS saviors.

I can only ask one thing: What crack pipe are they smoking?

________

* So sue me.

-UPDATE-

Ok, so the candidates in question apologized for their candidate statements and clarified their intentions. It seems they really didn't get how their statements would be construed. Fine, apology accepted; however this whole thing seems to indicate a lack of insight and/or diplomatic skills which is kind of important for an ALISS president. But oh well. I'm sure they're both perfectly nice people who are very enthusiastic and excited to take on leadership positions. If only they weren't so badly misinformed about ALISS's activities this year.
