Accessible Web Design Workshop
This workshop is designed to help UW instructors learn the basics about
effective and appropriate design of Web sites for education. Issues
addressed include legal requirements, basic precepts, priorities for
retrofitting existing pages, and tools for evaluation.
Workshop Length: 1.5 hours
Objectives
- Understand legal requirements for accessible design
- Discover accessibility-related issues for students with disabilities
- Prioritize accessible design elements
- Assemble a list of resources for ongoing accessible design support
Plan
In order to create accessible and usable Web-based resources, we will consider
the following questions:
- What is the goal of electronic publishing of course materials?
- Is my content concentrated in text or graphics? Both?
- How can I retrofit existing Web resources to make them more usable?
- What tools do I use to check if my materials are accessible?
Hands-on
We will practice the following tasks using Web-based resources:
- Use tools to test page(s) for accessibility
- Use alternate browsers and settings to evaluate usability
- Experiment with Adaptive Technology as an accommodation
