Neuro-Cyanotypes

The images below were created using the cyanotype process to print some well-known historical neuroscientific images. The cyanotype method was invented by Sir John F.W. Herschel in 1842.

The Cyanotype Method

  1. Image is printed on white paper.
  2. The back side of the printed paper is wiped with canola oil to create a negative. The paper is then left to dry.
  3. Watercolor paper is coated with cyanotype solution and left to dry.
  4. The negative is placed on top of the cyanotype-coated paper. A piece a glass is placed on top to hold everything together and maintain good contact between the negative and paper.
  5. The paper/negative/glass taken outside; the print is exposed to full sun for 15-20 minutes.
  6. The paper iswashed in water, then a dilute solution of hydrogen peroxide, and then washed again.
