This is normal. The problem is that if sending the message fails for any reason (e.g the connection to an external SMTP server is lost), then Alpine will add another space the next time it attempts to send the message, and so on, until the message is successfully sent. This is experimental and I do not have plans to roll it back to version 1.00 until I have tested it enough. UIDs are important in IMAP and I believe that this is the last piece that will make the associated imap server fully working. This bug is present in snapshots 925 and 934 (and possibly earlier), and it is a leftover of a change in the main code of Alpine that I had to update too.
