So far, the versions of the trial scene displayed throughout this site depict one version of the story and a wide variety of illustrations. As indicated in the introduction, the fixity of the story is artificial—since each edition, and even copies of the same edition, presents a slightly different version of the story. Eventually, this site could be expanded to include examples of textual variation within various editions of Pickwick Papers. Another possible avenue of expansion would be the inclusion of various "adaptations" and "piracies" of the trial scene. Clicking on the link to the "example" below, will take you to the first few pages of a theatrical adaptation of "Bardell versus Pickwick." At some point, I hope to reproduce the entire play within this site and to offer corresponding teaching exercises. Until that time, enjoy this selection from the play.
