Linguistics 270, Winter 2006
Introduction to Programming for Linguists Instructor: Bill McNeill Email: billmcn@u.washington.edu Office: EE1 209 Office Hours: Fridays 1:30-3:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 6:00-8:00 Denny 109
This course covers the fundamentals of computer programing in Python, a popular high-level language used for many commerical and research applications. The programming assignments in this class will focus on tasks of particular interest to linguists such as processing text and representing syntactic information in trees. The textbook for the course is "How to Think Like a Computer Scientist: Learning with Python". This book is available for free on the web or in .pdf form here. Paper copies are available at the bookstore, but are not required for this class. Earlier versions of this class were taught using using the Perl programming language instead of Python. I was not able to get the course title changed in time for the beginning of this class, so some course descriptions still have "Perl" in the title. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused. |
