What is CXTerm?
CXTerm is a program that is used to display Chinese
characters on an X-terminal. It must obtained from the ftp site,
the source code must then be unpacked, installed, and configured.
It can then be used to display Chinese email, or it can be used to
input Chinese. Input can be via pinyin, pinyin with tones, WuBi
(5-stroke input), or English, translating to Chinese characters. If
you are planning to input English, and having it translated to
Chinese, you need to know Chinese characters, to make sure the correct
Chinese characters are being entered for what you want to say.
Where do I get it from?
It can be ftp-ed using WWW from this URL:
ftp://ftp.cs.purdue.edu/pub/ygz/cxterm-5.0.tar.gz
How do I get it to work?
Unpack the source code
At the shell prompt:
- % gzip -dc cxterm-5.0.tar.gz | tar xvf -
- % cd cxterm-5.0
Configure the Source Code
At the shell prompt:
- % ./config .sh
- follow the instructions
See if you can run CXTerm
- To run cxterm using GB encoding, type:
CXterm -gb&
- To run cxterm with Big5 encoding, type:
CXterm -big5 &
Input using CXTerm
Cxterm will start out accepting input in ASCII. In order to switch
input methods, use the defined function keys:
- Shift + F1: switches cxterm back to ASCII input
- F1: toggles between disabling Chinese input function,
- F4: pinyin with tones, 1-5
- F6: pinyin without tones
- F7: 5-stroke input
- F8: English, with cxterm translating into Chinese characters
Displaying Chinese email using Cxterm
- Be sure your ncf
filters are enabled
- In Pine, export your email message to you home directory.
(It's a good idea to export it in some way so you know whether
your email is GB or Big5, since it will have to be displayed in
cxterm using the correct font encoding.)
- Set your terminal display:
% setenv DISPLAY termname.xx:0.0
- Call up CXterm. If you used the automatic configuration command,
you would call up CXterm with this command:
/uaXX/dxx/username/bin/CXterm -(gb or big5) &
- Another window session will open up on your xterminal, then to
display the message, use:
cat filename.ext
- To exit the session, in the CXterm window, switch it to ASCII
input
Type in exit.
