Dear Class of 2009,
Congratulations! This
is a time of transition for all of you, from ‘student doctor’ to ‘Doctor’,
from paying to hang out in the hospital to actually being paid, from
observing your intern assessing a sick cross-cover patient to being
responsible yourself.
Our goal for Capstone is to
make you a better and more confident intern, during those critical first few
weeks and throughout the year. We’ll focus on common problems you
WILL be called about, and common procedures you’re likely to perform.
Capstone is set up like a
Continuing Medical Education course. There are a few plenary sessions
that all of you will attend, but during most time slots you will choose what
you’d like to go to. This is one more transition you’re making – to
being a completely independent learner. As a resident, you’ll have
scheduled teaching conferences, but you’ll be the one deciding whether to go,
and what, when and how much to read. The need to stay current doesn’t
end after residency: reading, CME courses,
and Journal Clubs will be the source of most of your learning, and again,
you’ll choose what and how much to do.
As you decide what to
attend during the Capstone week, ask yourself:
1. What do I most need to
know for my specialty and my patients?
2. Where are my knowledge
or confidence gaps?
We’ve made suggestions for
‘intended audience’ (listed on the schedule) and have polled UW residency
faculty on what topics they’d suggest for students entering their
specialty.
You are also making the transition
to ‘teacher’. As an intern, you’ll be one of the most important
teachers your medical students and your patients have. To get a jump on
teaching, I’d like to ask for your assistance with teaching second year
students during their Transition to Clerkships (on Thursday afternoon May 28
or Friday May 29).
For every half
day you teach, you get credit for a half day of Capstone, which is graded on
attendance only. If you would like to take advantage of this
opportunity, email kmcdonou@u.washington.edu
We look forward to an exciting
and fun Capstone week!

Capstone II Requirements:
Attendance
to all Capstone II offerings is a graduation requirement.
As
part of your participation in the Capstone course, you will be required to
complete the Program Evaluation Survey section of the Association of American
Medical Colleges' 2008 Graduation Questionnaire (GQ). We are providing this information to you
now since many of you may have time to complete the 2008 GQ survey over the
next several weeks. However, if you
are unable to complete the survey before the Capstone course begins, there
will be a scheduled session on one afternoon of the Capstone week for you to
do this required component of the course.
If you are able to complete the GQ survey before the Capstone course
begins, you will have that afternoon time free.
